I've been engrossed in all sorts of jewelry stuff for the last few weeks. I'm lovin' it, but the hours and days just slip by!!!

A few updates...

More gorgeous beads!!! I just received a few wonderful briolettes, in peach & pink chalcedony, mystic green quartz, green apatite and rubellite quartz. I don't have many of these, so these jewelry pieces will be very limited and very special!

And I couldn't stop there, I ordered more gorgeous gemstones due any day now! I figured if I have to miss the upcoming gem and jewelry show next weekend because I'm too pregnant to walk around, I better order some through the mail to make me feel better.

I also have some more sterling silver wire coming so I can do a lot more wire wrapping.

I've been posting a bunch of jewelry to my Etsy store. Check it out at http://symphonyjewels.etsy.com

More jewelry photo shoots!! This pendant is called Malaysia and can be seen at my Etsy store or website. I hand cut metal sheet into an oval pendant shape, filed the edges smooth and hammered it for a lot of texture. Then I added a rich patina to the pendant, hung a couple chain danglies and a copper and sterling silver charm, on a gunmetal chain.

The studio relocation (from the new baby's room to the office) will be complete this weekend. (So will some much-needed housekeeping!!!)

I've been updating my website and my database so that inventory is perfect!!

I've also discovered Tophatter, an online auction site. Nothing like ebay! Users gather in an auction room and bid right there on the spot. There's plenty of socializing and plenty of cool things! I'll elaborate more in another blog post. But if you'd like an invitation, email me at symphonyjewels@aol.com for one!

Okay, that's enough for now! Gotta get back to it all!Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-34768472371534935632012-04-14T03:25:00.000-05:002012-04-14T03:25:18.776-05:00<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My most recent gemstone purchases are smaller, daintier gemstones, mostly faceted briolettes and some tiny rondelles. Although I say these are my most recent purchases, they've been in my studio for a while! Maybe it's been my brain trying to figure out just the right designs to make with them so I don't waste them! Especially since I have a limited quantity of quite a few of these.

But in the last couple weeks I've created a few new necklaces with these gems. One of which, Dancing with Dryads, is now seen in my banner for my blog and website.

My 2nd one is pictured here. I bought these swirly smoky blue pietersite briolettes at the last Gem & Jewelry Show in Rosemont that I attended... had to have 'em! And now they debut in this necklace, Spirit of the Sea.

Added a few other smoky blue stones... kyanite, sodalite and some deep metallic blue Swarovski crystals... wire-wrapped them all together with a nice dangly pendant cluster, and I MUST have one of these for myself!! :)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I bought my new awesome DSLR camera last spring and have been trying to learn more and more about photography and lighting. I've come to the conclusion that I love indirect natural daylight the best. I've learned somewhat how to manage to work with indoor lighting, but it's harder and much more time-consuming in the final photo editing process. And the color is just far superior and much more true with natural daylight.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My latest experiment this morning is my setup shown below.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">First, this table is located right next to a huge patio door. The morning sun shines brightly through this side of the house. I want to avoid harsh shadows around my jewelry, so I placed a large piece of wax paper on the window to filter the light, but still keep the optimum color temperature.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I then covered a bi-fold cardboard cutout with aluminum foil to put on the opposite side of the window to reflect light back onto the jewelry.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have a few pieces of scrapbook paper with neutral themes to use as a background to lay my jewelry on.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Props can be really cool if done nicely... I don't like too much stuff in the background, but I loved this decorative wood frame and the washed look on this wood box. They have turned out to be super-cool props and the wood box is my favorite yet!!

I recently had a request to design and make a custom bracelet for a new mother. Mom just had a son and Grandma wanted to make a bracelet with his name and Mom and Baby's birthstones in the bracelet. She wanted crystals and silver, chose a couple name bracelet designs that I had made in the past that she liked and I got to work making her a custom bracelet. This was the preliminary design that I showed Grandma. Baby's birthstone was amethyst (February) and Mom's birthstone was pink tourmaline (October).

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
She loved it! So I got to work making the final design, adjusted a couple little things here and there to make it the perfect length and sent the finished product out.
Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-51405071212442220772012-03-11T13:42:00.002-05:002012-03-12T12:51:21.998-05:00<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My Mess...

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Over the months and years as I make jewelry and make messes at my workstation, things scatter around my studio, leftover beads and material get left out and it eventually adds up. Probably about 2 years ago, I gathered up all this stuff, in my attempt at de-cluttering, and put it all in a plastic container. I was trying to put it all in one place to more easily go through it. But the plastic container got shoved out of the way on a shelf and forgotten.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">For the past week, I have been completely rearranging 2 rooms in the house to get ready for the new baby, due June 4. My studio (the extra bedroom) is now turning into the baby's room and I am consolidating and packing half the office so I can move my studio into a section of that room. So I stumbled across this tucked away plastic container.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I've at least opened it to see what's in it. Some beads, some finished jewelry pieces, some stuff that needs re-design or repair, some practice wirework stuff... and it's now my goal to finally get this mess taken care of! I will try very hard to be more disciplined in the future and put stuff back where it belongs right away, so I don't have to deal with this again!!
New custom order that I just finished (finally!!).

I love this necklace! It was designed to match the Coca Rose earrings. I created a wire wrapped ring and added a faceted pink mystic quartz briollete dangly and another dangly with three faceted smoky quartz rondelles. Then I added a few wire wrapped smoky quartz trios along the neckline and finished the piece with a rich bronze patina. I'll definitely be making something similar to this for myself!!! I have some gorgeous blue mystic quartz that just might do the trick!

I made this pendant quite a while ago, but just couldn't figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of the necklace. For the pendant, I wire-wrapped ivory freshwater pearls around a thick copper wire ring. The core is finished with a dark patina and the thinner wire wrapping is still a bright copper providing a nice contrast. I wanted to keep the rest of the design simple, but something a little different than how I normally finish a wire necklace. So I made a small section of double stranded black chain, then went to a single strand. And I love the contrast of elegant ivory pearls with the dark metal.

Sweeeeet!!!

We brought our 2-year-old with us... no one warned us. We now know better.

Anyway, there's a bead store that I try to visit every time I'm there. They had these beautiful hand-dyed silk ribbons... I couldn't resist!!! Now I just have to figure out what to do with them! But I just HAD to get a few... check out these colors!

<img border="0" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDgDp9JzNhpQcGfwKzntbNK7Jm0buEGepcS1yWoBbLtNpXIZt_xqoNPpaEXluufX0r08uTRYOFoVxiq62gQuOKIV2oIYeHzJVcEw3n01sTQBoGmWGI-skYMNKc0e9TvkAUZl9n/s320/IMG_1754.JPG" t$="true" width="320" />
Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-35755579953636158182011-07-26T20:12:00.000-05:002011-07-26T20:12:25.608-05:00
This was a really interesting piece. First I made the pendant... I cut an oval shape out of my copper sheet, filed down the edges to make them smooth, then hammered it, stamped it with a couple swirls and added a patina to really bring out the texture of the piece. I riveted a decorative antiqued flower to the disc to finish the pendant design.

Then I had to figure out what to do with the rest of the necklace!! I knew I wanted to use wire, but had to pick out the color scheme and stones. I started sifting through all of my supplies and came up with this gorgeous aqua blue theme! I had only a few of these turquoise nuggets left, so selected those first. I knew I wanted to add some sparkle, so grabbed some Swarovski crystals. Then I had to find one other stone to compliment the pattern. These frosty sea opal glass rondelles were perfect! I came up with an asymmetrical pattern and, voila!

I made this just a couple weeks before my last jewelry show and it was one of the first things to sell.

It was a wonderful weekend! I couldn't have asked for better weather (we really lucked out that all the thunderstorms missed us 2 days in a row!!). I met some wonderful new people, I caught up with my fellow artists, I bought some super-cool artwork and the show was very successful. Thank you to all of my customers, old and new. You are the reason I do this! It's always so satisfying to me to be able to make you happy with my jewelry. Every piece I make is a little piece of me and it means the world to me that you support me! I loved chatting with you and getting to know you and your families. I hope to see you all again soon!Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-13358320416386335992011-06-23T18:43:00.002-05:002011-06-23T18:47:43.194-05:00

One of my brand new designs! I thought I could set a goal of making one new thing every day, but then I remembered I have a 2- year-old and a husband who would like to see me once in a while. So I have to realistically adjust that goal!

I have also purchased an amazing new camera, so photo shoots take up a lot of time as well. I'll be posting new photos very soon. I also bought some gorgeous new faceted gemstones... andalusite, tourmaline, amethyst, green quartz and a super-cool fuchsia chalcedony.

Lots to do, lots to do!Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-46792917660753604642011-03-04T23:04:00.002-06:002011-03-04T23:11:05.321-06:00Studio Under Construction
My studio, a.k.a. the guest room, is under construction. Which is a wonderful thing! Right now that room is jam-packed with all of my jewelry supplies, art supplies, a bed, a workstation, some shelving and the closet has all of my art show setup gear. It's a disaster! I can barely breathe in that room... it's so cluttered! But my wonderful husband is fixing that. We still need a guest room because of all the entertaining we do, but I also need a well-organized area to get away and create. So my husband is building a beautiful wall unit around the bed, so I can have all the storage I need without everything being out in the open and looking cluttered, and the bed can stay! It's coming along nicely, except that he forgot about some ductwork and phone/cable lines that need to be moved. Good thing he's handy! All shelving should be up and installed in the next few days. Then we have to stain it and my supplies can go into their new home! At some point down the road, the drawers will be built and drawers and doors will be installed. I've also thrown out the idea that I need a sturdy workbench for all of my hammering and soldering. I can't wait to see the finished product! And then I can design in my new zen!Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-7916826103212466892008-10-21T21:16:00.003-05:002008-10-21T21:25:15.844-05:00

I have this absolutely incredible amazing dog! He’s lovable, intelligent, devoted, beautiful, and can be adorably obnoxious… as all puppies are. He’s a German-bred show line German Shepherd. His name is Cash and he’s 2 years old. And he’s my pride and joy! My poor husband doesn’t think he can ever compete with the animals… maybe he’s right. I don’t think so, I do love my husband. But Cash is just awesome!

When I was a kid, a German Shepherd bit me. I had over 150 stitches in my face and was hospitalized for a week. I still loved dogs after that, even saying in recovery, “He’s sorry, he’s a good dog, he didn’t mean to do it.” German Shepherds can be amazing dogs, but with any large, smart, powerful dog, gosh, you have to know what you’re getting!! So I knew I needed to research and find the right bloodlines, the right breeder. As soon as I met Cash’s dad Saint, I knew I had to have a Saint pup! I was then able to pick the mom, and then had first pick male of that litter.

I’ve worked with Cash since he was a puppy - socializing him, building his drive and building his spirit. He’s a certified therapy dog and he’s perfect for it! He LOVES people. Walk up to him and kneel down and you’ll have him slurping your face… don’t try to stop him once he’s started, or he’ll just lick your ears or your hair, or whatever else is exposed.

I have done some preliminary Schutzhund training with Cash over the last two years and have now finally found a great Schutzhund club and have set aside the time and the money to pursue the sport with him. Schutzhund is a sport developed for the German Shepherd that involves obedience, protection and tracking. Schutzhund tests the temperament, nerves and workability of the breed. It’s a very demanding sport for a dog and once a dog is titled in Schutzhund, it’s a testament to that dog’s soundness of mind and body.

We had our first training session (in quite a while!) on Saturday, and I was so impressed with Cash. From what I saw of him that day, he has just as much potential as I had always hoped he had. I’ve been working with him all week, riling him up for protection work and obedience. I can’t wait to go back to class next Saturday. It will be fun to see him improve every week and get to the point where he’s running blinds.

Google Schutzhund for more fascinating information on the sport! For really super-cool videos, go to www.youtube.com and check out the Schutzund videos… it’s AMAZING what these dogs can do!

Kim Falat ~ Symphony Jewelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09378338962980057454noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18323613.post-11964629976742877202008-10-05T21:10:00.004-05:002008-10-05T21:13:02.535-05:00

This year has been a wonderful year of growth for Symphony Jewels. I have had a summer of successful art shows, repeat customers visiting me regularly and frequent requests for custom jewelry. Now that the business is supporting itself, I have wanted to get more involved in local charities. For the last two years, sales from my Cancer Awareness bracelet has benefited the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, but I want to do more. Tonight a great opportunity came along. My aunt belongs to a local women’s club that hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. She called to ask if I wanted to donate a piece of jewelry to their next auction.

This week I have a necklace and earring set that is being featured in the Hawthorn Woods Women’s Club annual Love Fund Auction.
